Trooper Lives Up To His Name
by Robert Whitehead

In October of 2007, Trooper was bailed out of the OC Shelter, badly lacerated from what was believed to have been a car accident and very underweight.  His medical treatment was sponsored by Poochmatch and the Animal Assistance League of Orange County. His subsequent foster care and convalescence was provided by Poochmatch volunteer Daniel Freed. I adopted Trooper on December 16, 2007 at the Irvine Shelter Pet Fair.

I had been in search of the “right dog” for many months and had pretty much given up hope.  During my search for a dog, I had made contact with Poochmatch and was placed on their e-mail distribution list. I received a recruitment e-mail for volunteers to work at the Poochmatch booth at the December fair and decided to volunteer. Upon reaching the booth, I spotted Trooper, a very scrawny black and white Pointer mix with bare spots of fur. Although I was not looking for this type of dog, I felt a definite connection with him. As fair visitors came by the booth to look at the dogs including Trooper, I found myself concerned that someone might adopt him. Subconsciously, I began keeping Trooper off to the side so people would not notice him as much. One of the other volunteers noticed my behavior and asked if I would be interested in adopting Trooper. I had not given it much thought up until that point, but the idea began to grow on me. As my allotted volunteer time drew to an end and Trooper had not yet been adopted, I decided to take a risk and adopt him. I knew that I had made the right decision when I placed Trooper in the passenger seat of my car for the ride home from the shelter and he jumped in my lap in the driver’s seat where he stayed for the entire ride home.

Trooper has become the love of my life and we are now inseparable. He has also become the favorite dog in my condominium complex. Many of my neighbors come to my patio daily just to visit him. He has made many people and doggie friends within my complex.  He loves adults, children and other dogs alike. Trooper, now at his normal weight, adorns a beautiful coat and is complemented on his handsome looks by all.  Trooper enjoys long walks, hiking, playing with his toys, cuddling in bed, and romping in my mother’s large back yard.

Although I have only had Trooper for six months, it seems like he has always been a part of my life and I can not imagine life without him. Words cannot describe all of the joy and comfort that he has brought to my life and the life of my elderly mother. Being a spiritual person, I truly believe that Trooper was sent to us by God.

Raider

My name is Raider, I was born in a doghouse during those cold days in December.   My new family saw my picture on the Internet and just had to have me.   Poochmatch    volunteers took me to their home where we could meet.  Apparently they fell in love with me because they filled out the application, had a house check, signed the contract and paid the adoption fee.  I was theirs!  My new family has three boys, a four-pound Chihuahua named Tea Cup (one year old) and a seven-year-old black Shar Pei named Soda Pop.  Tea Cup and I started chasing each other around the rock garden until I crashed.  My new mom had to take me out of the garden so Poochmatch.com could take a family picture.   I am very lucky I have both human and doggie playmates and I am in such a loving home.  Okay, I need to go running with Tea Cup and Soda Pop, see you later.

Négro

Hi!!  My name is currently Négro (I’m waiting for my new family to give me a new name and then I’ll tell you).  I’m a German shepherd/corgi mix whose family no longer wanted me.  My mom was a single mom and my dad had become a teenager and was no longer interested in dogs.  I was left in the patio area of the apartment without a doghouse, bed, and no shade or water bowl.  Since money was tight, I didn’t get good quality food.  Poochmatch tried to find me a new home.  Finally, interest came through Petfinder.  A man in San Jose saw my picture and thought I would be the perfect dog for his family.  They had had a German shepherd and the wife liked corgis!  After several phone conversations the application was approved and an appointment for the house check was made.  Two volunteers took me from Orange County to San Jose.  It was a long trip we stopped at rest stops for me and I got two hamburgers and some dog treats!  We arrived at the house at noon, Lisa (my new mom) and my new brother were in the front yard waiting for me.  They met me first and loved my floppy ear!  Then Lisa met the Poochmatch volunteers and took us all into the house.  After I had sniffed around a bit we went in the back yard…they have grass, bushes, trees, a cat and a water bowl.  I explored the yard and scared the cat (I didn’t know it was her hiding place.  My new dad and sister came home and loved me too (they liked my ear too).  I played ball with my new brother and drank lots of water.  Nearly all the extended family is coming to meet me.  My mom said I’m going to meet her horse and I will go with the family to pick out the Christmas tree.  I will sleep in mom and dad’s room on my own bed!  Thank you Poochmatch for finding me my new, loving home.

Doc

My name is Doc.  I’m a five-year-old, blonde Cocker Spaniel.  I was living in a wonderful home where my dad walked me and played with me all the time.  Then something happened, my dad became very sick and could only move around with a walker and my mom developed pet allergies.  I was put outside and had to sleep in the garage.  I wasn’t allowed to go in the house and love my dad any more.  Family came to visit and they called rescue groups to see if anyone could find me a new home where I could be with people.  Poochmatch.com agreed to try and find me a home.  A week later, I was in front at PetSmart with PoochMatch.com for their adoption presentation, when I met two strangers and another Cocker Spaniel.  These strangers took me to their home and on the way I found out the other cocker was named Ginger. I howled the first night in this home.  I was allowed to sleep in the house, but nothing is familiar. It’s hard to adjust to a new location when you have lived in one place with two people since puppy hood.  I am glad I have Ginger to show me the ropes. I Iike it here and I like my new owners.  So I guess I am lucky to be able to live in two such wonderful homes during my short life.

Dakoda

My name is Dakota; I’m one of the Cocker mix puppies that were born in San Bernardino during the cold weather.  My mom had been given to Poochmatch.com before she had us, but, she was too quick and we came before we could be placed in a foster home.  Mom finally allowed strangers to come near us at four weeks and mom and her litter were moved to a foster home in Orange County.  My new mom came to see the litter and fell in love…with all of us.  I was the lucky one because she chose me.  Some Poochmatch.com volunteers took me from my foster home to my new home.  I explored the yard and loved it.  There was a fence there to keep me from wandering.  I found my water bowl and met my mistress’s brother who wanted a puppy too.  I hope he adopts one of my brothers or sisters.  I can’t wait to begin my life with my new family.

Dillion

Hi! My name is Rockit, formerly Dillon (I’m the light colored one in the picture). I was found by the pet-sitter of a Poochmatch.com volunteer who knew who to contact. I was placed in a foster home with Bonita, a Chihuahua mix and two cats. It was a great place to live! I had a bathroom all to myself with a bed and piddle pads. I was fed regularly and loved a lot. I love people and people’s laps. My new family brought Throttle to meet me. Throttle and I checked each other out and started playing. Soon we had Mom all wrapped up in our leashes. It was great fun! We went to Mom and Dad’s home to check it out. They live upstairs so they planted grass in kitty litter boxes so we could have grass! What thoughtful parents! Throttle and I started chasing each other around the house. She knew the layout better than me so she didn’t crash into the sofa. I’ll learn the layout really fast. Mom and Dad are going to get a house with a backyard very soon so Throttle and I will have a bigger place to play. They also want to foster small dogs so I will have a variety of friends. Isn’t life wonderful!

Nala

My name is Nala, formerly Sunshine (I’m the light colored spot on Mom’s lap). A poochmatch.com volunteer saw me in a yard with no shelter, no bed and no water bowl. I was there for two nights in that extremely cold weather crying my heart out because I was alone. The volunteer got me from that family and I went into a foster home with four dogs (all bigger than me). I played with the youngest dog in the house and slept in a playpen in my foster mom’s room. Lots of people wanted to adopt me so I had my first and only viewing at Petsmart where I was held by lots of people who wanted me. One family brought their dog so I could meet her. I don’t think Sadie knows what to think of me. I went to the family with the dog and a little girl who likes princesses. I explored the yard carefully and cautiously until I felt secure and regained my bouncing step. The little girl has learned to say”No Nala, give me my Snow White” because I steal her princesses. I also steal Sadie’s chew bones when she’s not looking. I have to have my treats! I sleep in a play pen in Mom and Dad’s room and Dad gets up quickly when I cry that I want to go outside. Grandma baby-sits the princess girl and me. Does she have her hands full! I like toys and they don’t have to be for puppies. My new family is happy with me and I’m glad to be in a place where I’m not ignored.

Baby

Hi!!! My name is Baby. I’m a purebred Maltese, born in the South and brought to California. At nine months-of-age, my family decided to move and only wanted to take my Chihuahua sibling with them. I was too much work for them (Gee, I’m a puppy. What did they expect?) Pooch Match heard my story and took me in. My foster family discovered that I’m a sweet little girl who liked to play with my foster mom’s Maltese/Pomeranian mix. My new mom lives in Los Angeles and works for Dr. Phil! Do you think he will do a program about people who don’t know how to handle puppies and suggest that they need training? I hope so.

Julie

My name is Julie. I’m a rat terrier mix who was deserted by her family along with her sibling, a Corgi mix. The people who bought my house didn’t want either of us and were planning to dump us on the side of the freeway! A young woman intervened (Thank Goodness!) and brought both of us to Pooch Match volunteer where we were both fostered until we got new homes. My new mom lives in Los Angeles and works at the Nail Stop. I go to work with her and sit on her lap. I behave the entire time until it’s time to go home. What a life!
